PARK(ing) Day was started in 2005 to raise awareness about the lack of green spaces in San Francisco’s downtown. It is based on the idea to transform a carpark into a public space.
In 2008 Brisbane participated and featured 40 parks on the day, attracted many people and the media. The PARKs are surprising, fun additions to the everyday street environments, and powerful symbols of placemaking and communities wanting to improve urban quality. Deicke Richards Architecture firm at Baxter Street in Brisbane was transformed into a beautiful, temporary forest marking international PARK(ing) Day.
Clients, colleagues and friends joined in for a picnic in the park which the event prompted communities to rethink how our streets are used and sparked creative diverse conversations about sustainable cities. Leda and Deicke Richards participated in the event and sees the event as a fun, community spirited way to advocate for open space in the city.

The site’s forest theme was chosen, in recognition of international year of the forest. Overall the day was a success and the event called for the attention to the importance of open public space in the city and rethink the way we use our streets. Leda is a proud supporter of the day by providing temporary bicycle parking to participating companies such as Deicke Richards.
