Dockbrain for logistics centres

Leda in conjunction with Fast-Automation in Australia have developed a loading dock control system that allows logistics centres to book and manage trucks much like airport traffic control. Called ‘Dockbrain,’ it is a unique system in that trucks are pre-booked to a specific door number. If the truck and door is fitted with RFID, the truck can only gain site entry inside the specified visiting window and can only dock at the nominated door. According to Leda, in addition to OHS improvements, ‘dockbrain’ will alleviate the need for queuing, increase efficiencies for busy distribution centres and reduce the incidence of stock theft from loading docks. The system can be centrally managed via the web, at site by a manager or at door level. The system is designed to be equipment independent so should work across pre-existing dock levellers and access control systems. Auditing and reports allow you to see when a truck was at a specific door with the capability to see which fork lift loaded or unloaded it. Leda claim it can also integrate with climate control and lighting to further manage costs associated with any such site. For the OHS conscious, ‘dockbrain’ can manage opening and closing of equipment in sequence or at the very least monitor events at loading docks. “Each installation of dock brain is a unique solution and we do not envisage an off the shelf product for larger distribution centres,” reports Leda’s Dock Technical Manager, Craig Evans. Already, RFID and vehicle tracking at shipping ports is the norm with thousands of trucks tagged in recent years. If it is any indication of truck management for distribution centres, it would suggest the ‘dockbrain’ may be the next step in integration. Leda Security Products of Australia will be demonstrating their “dockbrain” system at the Safety in Action Trade show in Melbourne from April 6th – 8th 2011 (Stand H28).
